The Sapphires are four young Aboriginal girls – Gail, Julie, Kay and Cynthia – who are discovered one night in a dusty outback tavern by lanky, often soused Irish-born talent scout Dave (Chris O’Dowd). With a sharp ear for honey-tinged voices, he convinces the girls to switch their act from country and western to rhythm and blues.

Dave vows to make The Sapphires shine. And against all odds, he pulls it off: the Sapphires’ first gig takes them to war-torn Southeast Asia, where they entertain the troops.

The affable O’Dowd is so endearing as Dave that he would nearly steal the show – if it weren’t for the sparkling presence and irrepressible charm of his co-stars. The Sapphires is a gem of a film – and be sure to stay for the closing credits for some final fun surprises. – Toronto International Film Festival 2012
Regarded by his neighbours as a harmless misfit, Jimmy has spent all his adult life as the caretaker of the crumbling family farm on the outskirts of a small town. He is limited, non-educated, isolated, yet through relentless determination gets through each day as best he can by keeping a smile on his face. Jimmy also cares for his ill, bed-ridden father as well as dealing with the daily routine of running the farm. Life has been
tough on Jimmy over the years, coping with isolation and loneliness, but things are about to get worse, as life hits a very rough patch. Pilgrim Hill aims to shed light on the dark side of rural Ireland, where middle-aged men and women are living out their lives in isolation and loneliness. – Galway Film Fleadh 2012

Summer in the GDR in 1980. Barbara, a doctor, has submitted an application to emigrate to the West. She is punished by being posted away from the capital to a hospital in a small town. Jörg, her lover in the West, is busy planning her escape via the Baltic Sea. It’s a waiting game for Barbara. Her new flat, the neighbours, summer and the countryside no longer hold any charms for her. Although she is attentive to her young patients in the department for paediatric surgery under her new boss, André, she is deliberately cool to her colleagues. Her life, she thinks, will begin later. André confuses her. First there’s his unshakable faith in her professional abilities, then there’s way he cares, and his winning smile. What makes him cover up for her when she helps Stella, a young runaway? Is he spying on her? Is he in love? Barbara begins to lose her grip on herself, her plans and her heart. The day of her planned escape approaches. After GESPENSTER (2005) and YELLA (2007) this marks Christian Petzold’s third outing in the Berlinale’s Competition programme. His new work once again centres on a woman who seems to drift through life like a phantom. Hers is a life in which the fear of surveillance seems to be firmly embedded in all interpersonal relationships

A massive box office success in Québec, Ken Scott’s comedic Starbuck tracks a likeable middle-aged loser as he wrestles with regret and responsibility. Hapless deliveryman David Wozniak gets parking tickets at every single stop along his route, has thugs on his tail for massive overdue loans, and his girlfriend announced that she was pregnant just before dumping him. These, however, are the least of David’s concerns when he returns home to find a lawyer in his kitchen. The past is back to haunt him in the form of a class-action lawsuit, launched by 142 of the 533 children who resulted from the 648 sperm donations he deposited over 20 years ago.

David turns to his best friend Paul, a lawyer and father of an unruly brood, who is eager to defend David’s right to privacy in this landmark case. But a package of photos of David’s progeny arrives, inspiring a clandestine search for his children and a poignant attempt at anonymous fatherhood. – Seattle International Film Festival 2012

Sachi is an introverted little girl. Her mother dies unexpectedly and although she doesn’t shed a tear, her pain is nonetheless deep and keen. Helpless, Sachi’s father dons his starched shirt and perfect tie and tries his best pick up his work-a-day routine once more. Sachi’s only comfort is a necklace with a ring that belonged to her mother. This keepsake helps Sachi to believe that her mother is always near, protecting her. Bereft, lonely and consumed by grief, her father descends at home into a kind of dementia. And so Sachi will have to manage by herself somehow.

Are there such things as ghosts? Her new girlfriend at school certainly thinks so. But when the existence of an afterworld is refuted during a lesson Sachi loses the one thing that was keeping her going. All at once, she feels vulnerable and brutally exposed to boundless, unbearable emptiness. In long, intense shots, the director succeeds in creating an unsolvable discord between childlike belief and rational thought. Ultimately, the loss of naïve hope can also be seen as a new beginning.– Berlin Film Festival 2012

In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoeshiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight.
